african gallery
This subtle yet complex refresh of the 4,000-square-foot African galleries highlights the best of the collection while allowing flexibility for future evolution. Over six weeks, art and construction moved in tandem to install crisp plexiglass back panels and fabric-wrapped decks. Revisions to the layout supported the exhibition designer’s vision, introducing carefully placed freestanding cases that complement the existing architectural wooden structures.
The thoughtful updates bring the 200 objects closer to the viewer through new mounts and a refined, contemporary color palette. The lighting, carefully adjusted alongside the new layouts, enhances material richness and fine details without overpowering the work. Together, these elements create an environment that feels both timeless and adaptable, setting the stage for ongoing reinterpretations of the collection.
Close collaboration between designers, curators, and contractors ensured minimal disruption to the gallery’s active schedule, resulting in a seamless transformation that honors both the art and its evolving story.
