north campus residence hall
The new residence hall at the University of Chicago was designed to attract world-class students, with every architectural and interior detail carefully considered to support student life and academic success. Lighting played a critical role in this mission.
All luminaires and placements were thoughtfully selected to minimize eye fatigue during late-night study sessions, while maintaining a lively, energetic atmosphere throughout the day. Indirect lighting sources were prioritized to create soft, glare-free environments that promote focus and comfort — essential for both studying and socializing.
Careful coordination between design intent and budget constraints led to the strategic use of efficient, high-quality fixtures that balance performance with cost-effectiveness. The result is a dynamic and supportive lighting environment that enhances both the academic and residential experience, contributing to the University’s goal of creating a vibrant, inspiring home for its students.
