Radiant I (1956), Richard Lippold’s abstract stainless-steel sculpture in Chicago’s Inland Steel Building, was commissioned by Inland Steel Company president Leigh Block. Suspended above a reflecting pool, its red, gold, and silver wires support a radiant stainless-steel form that stretches between floor and ceiling. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the Inland Steel Building and sculpture received Chicago landmark status in 1998.

In 2025, the building undertook a full restoration of Radiant I led by Third Coast Conservation. Each element of the intricate sculpture was cleaned by hand, while the reflecting pool was drained, restored, and returned to its original luster. Polymath upgraded the existing lighting with wireless, color-changing LED lamps installed in the recessed track-head locations. Preserving the historic drywall ceiling and reducing installation time from weeks to days, the new system provides flexible light levels that heighten Radiant I’s restored red, gold, and silver hues.  It also enables lighting to transition from day to night, enhancing the intended color palette across changing seasons and times of day.
