ukiyo-e masterpieces
This temporary installation, featuring approximately 140 hanging scrolls and 6 hand scrolls, explored the intimate meanings behind Ukiyo-e. Given the age and delicate material of the works — paintings on silk — maintaining strict light level requirements was critical throughout the design process.
Low light levels were essential to protect the artwork, with a target of 6.5 footcandles. Both in-case and overhead track lighting were meticulously measured and calibrated before art installation to ensure compliance. Careful balancing allowed for sufficient visibility to support visitor movement while preserving the artwork’s integrity.
Despite the technical challenges, the lighting design successfully maintained the lively and energetic atmosphere envisioned by both the client and the exhibition designer. Thoughtful coordination and precise adjustments ensured that the emotional impact of the exhibition was preserved without compromising conservation standards, allowing visitors to experience the vibrancy and intimacy of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
